Cameroon: Douala Archbishop Emeritus Christian Cardinal Tumi Dies At 91 On Good Friday
The Archbishop emeritus of the Douala Metropolitan Diocese, North West born His Eminence Christian Cardinal Wiyghan Tumi has died at the age of 91. The demise of the staunch advocate for a just society, a defender of the rights of the oppressed, suppressed and marginalized, was pronounced by Bird of ill-omen late Friday, April 2, 2021 in Douala.
The first and only Cameroonian cardinal from Kikaikelaki in Kumbo, Bui Division, initiator of the All Anglophone General Conference, was kidnapped on November 5, 2020, and released on November 6 2020.
He was succeeded as archbishop of Douala metropolitan Diocese by Samuel Kleda, who had been Coadjutor Archbishop.
WHO WAS CHRISTIAN CARDINAL TUMI?
He was ordained a priest on 17 April 1966 in Soppo, diocese of Buea, and from 1966 to 1967, carried out his ministry as a parochial vicar at Fiango (Kumbo). From 1967 to 1969 he was a professor at the Bishop Rogan College minor seminary. In 1973, after having studied abroad, he returned to his diocese and was named rector of the major regional seminary of Bambui, archdiocese of Bamenda. He was also chaplain to the Association of Catholic Dames and was very involved in promoting the ecumenical movement, obtaining much esteem by Presbyterians and Baptists.
He was made Cardinal by Pope John Paul 2 on 28th June 1988.
The late Cardinal also previously served as Bishop of Yagoua (1979 to 1982), Coadjutor Archbishop of Garoua (1982 to 1984), and Archbishop of Douala (1991 to 2009), among other duties.
