Review: The Just Ended ACAFEMMI Music Seminar(Lessons learned: we can make trillions in music business)
Part1:
This is one of the first eye-opening music seminars in Cameroon that will supposedly lead the way to more future seminars. In some countries just around Africa seminars are organized more than 5-6 times a month, for example Lagos, Nigeria(Rene Immortal Matik). This simply explains why majority of artists in that country are supper successful. In America, the music sub set of their entertainment industry produces more than 2hundred trillion dollars yearly, due to their out standing knowledge of the music business and if properly handled, the ministry of cultures across Africa, will be the richest ministries in their respective countries( representative, Midem)
Now, this is a very simple and visible example, outstanding football players in the 1970s-80s and 90s, can't compare riches with some of their colleagues playing just first and second division marches in Europe todays. As digital knowledge keeps proving best system of trade, which is the most easiest, and people keep believing that any human transaction can be very viable economically, so is the music industry, especially with such a high digitalised knowledge
Nowadays, music is no longer done by young boys or girls to impress themselves in love affairs or show how beautiful or handsome they are, or to insults others. The main reason for young artists doing music especially in less develop countries nowadays, should purely be business wise and not frustration as we are meant to believe. That's why music seminars should be obligatory to talented and passionate artists, excluding excited artists.
Cutting corners, our 'raison d'être' or core of our write up, centers around the just ended Music seminar which many believe it was the most impressive and convenient thing that has happened to the industry for a long time, organized by ACAFEMMI, an association founded by ADELINE MBENKUM, present Board Chair of SONACAM.
The seminar was organized in the presence of the representative of the minister of culture, the director of SONACAM, the Vice Board Chair of SONACAM, the representative of Medaim(one of the biggest music marketing and royalty right collection organizations in Africa), a representative from the German Embassy, guess speakers such as RENE IMMORTAL MATIK, an international Diplomat in music business and DIVINE VERKIJIKA, an artist(Dyllan) and an expert in music distribution and streaming. They all shared their different experiences in music and in music business in particular.
A speech was made by the head of the organizing team of the event, Adeline Mbenkum, proceeded by few comments by the high dignitaries about the event, and finally to the theme of the event was laid out: music publishing, royalties and digital distribution.
This goes particularly to artists, if we must value what we have today, not to cry tomorrow when we loss it, it should be giving our outmost attention and appreciation to Rene Immortal Matik for his expertise and free delivering of his music business knowledge for little or no pay to us. He can be called to work anywhere in the world and before we know it, he's gone.
He spoked blatantly about music publishing which many hailed him for his expertise and before the end of the seminar, everyone was at the door waiting to collect his number. These are such opportunities artists should stand chance of. His simple explanation on music publishing, almost concluded the seminar due to the broadness of the topic that touches every part on music business in general.
In a concluding statement for more clarity, Mr. Matik shared a little story where he once lost 50.000pounds because a fake publisher faked a publishing deal with him and his song was let out without any publishing protection. Also, the representative of Medaim, in the same line, added that, they discovered their song was secretly used somewhere without their knowledge, but thanks the song was under protection and when they put up a case against the victims, 100.000dollars was recovered from it. Start converting this amount to your local currencies and see how one can just neglect and lost such an amount due to lack of knowledge.
Not elaborating much on what happened at the event because I won't keep encouraging laziness, this event came like a reawakening to the entire music industry in Cameroon, especially to artists who are ready to undergo the music Journey.
Many artists kept asking for when the next event will be organized. It was an interesting come together in this direction. Artists, especially Francophones artists seized the opportunity and turn up in the numbers.
Part2:
The most entertaining part of it all thought controversial as some artists considered faulted, was the compensated showcase to the seminar which kicked off immediately after that.
There were great performances from the artists invited, though 93% older artists and 7% young artists. Great artists such as Adeline Mbenkum and the Tribute sisters, Le Doux, Tikumndi and Takam 2, all put amazing performances. From the younger artists, Dyllan, One Love, Phil Daisy and many who, do to one misunderstanding or the other, didn't performed such Mr Christiano.
This is actually where there was almost a torsle between the said young artists who were booked but didn't performed, and the event organizers. Analysising the situation as a whole, there was a little poor organization in that direction. But candidly, the small showcase of compensation to the main event, can be see seen as it was only for the old artists.
But, what artists who didn't performed should understand is that, it was not a concert, it was only a showcase. I know the pains when an artist feels to climb on stage, but won't, even if it's just a simple gathering. If we can just understand it was not a concert, then, we'll come to terms with each other.
Without elaborating much on the showcase because, I won't equally encourage laziness, everything went on well except for such little complain which surfaced by the artists.
Amidst all the little upheavals, these part was 64% successful in it's direction. But in other directions, it could've been 95% failure.
We pray for more seminars as such👏👏👏
